AIMA to Recruit 450 Employees to Meet Growing Demand

The Agency for Integration, Migration, and Asylum (AIMA) is set to hire 450 new employees in the coming months to address the increasing demand for its services. Of these, 300 will be on fixed-term contracts of up to three years.

During a hearing at the Committee on Constitutional Affairs, Rights, Freedoms, and Guarantees, AIMA’s president, Pedro Gaspar, stated that the agency currently employs 674 staff members—an increase of 2% since its establishment in October 2023, following the dissolution of the Foreigners and Borders Service and the High Commissioner for Migration.

Gaspar emphasized that this modest growth has enabled AIMA to manage staff mobility and retirement pressures, despite reports of significant departures.

As part of the staffing expansion, AIMA is also preparing for the closure of its Mission Structure—an independent, temporary unit handling backlog cases, which is set to be dismantled by mid-year. To support operations, the agency plans to recruit around 150 permanent employees from public service programs and other sectors.

Additionally, competitive hiring procedures will launch this quarter, concluding by early April, to bring in 300 fixed-term employees.

“In total, we are looking at approximately 450 new hires—this represents a major workforce expansion for AIMA,” Gaspar stated. However, he acknowledged that external recruitment might face delays due to high application volumes, which could extend the selection process.
