Starting 2025, the European Union will launch the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS), which will change the way citizens from the United States, the United Kingdom, and other non-EU countries travel to Europe. This new system will introduce a pre-authorization process aimed at enhancing security while keeping border controls efficient.
Europe is not closing its borders but is instead establishing a system to regulate who can enter its territory. Both ETIAS and the Entry/Exit System (EES) reflect the EU’s dedication to maintaining secure borders while still allowing legitimate travelers entry.
ETIAS Requirements
Travelers from non-EU countries, such as the U.S. and U.K., will need to secure ETIAS authorization before entering any EU member state. This new system will bring an end to unrestricted visa-free travel for these passport holders by introducing a pre-screening process to detect potential security threats.
EES Implementation
Alongside ETIAS, the Entry/Exit System (EES) will require all travelers, including those with Schengen visas, to provide biometric data—such as fingerprints and facial scans—when entering and exiting the EU. This initiative is designed to strengthen border security and track the movements of non-EU nationals more efficiently.
Exemptions
EU citizens and legal residents are exempt from both ETIAS and EES requirements. High-net-worth (HNW) travelers can continue to enjoy visa-free, privacy-oriented travel within the EU by obtaining EU citizenship or residency through investment programs.
ETIAS is Not Schengen Visas
ETIAS is an electronic travel authorization that permits stays in the Schengen Zone for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Unlike Schengen visas, which are necessary for travelers from countries that do not have visa-free access, ETIAS offers a simpler entry process for eligible travelers.
Effect on Various Nationalities
ETIAS will affect travelers from several countries and citizens of these countries will need ETIAS approval to visit any Schengen country: British, American, Australian, Brazilian, Canadian, and Japanese Citizens.
Today, a European Residency is a key asset for Investors.
The introduction of ETIAS represents a major change for non-European investors. Without European residency, travelers from non-EU countries will now need ETIAS approval in addition to Schengen visa to enter the Schengen Zone. This makes residency-by-investment programs increasingly vital for maintaining unrestricted access to Europe, as they provide the only true "visa-free" entry option.
